Recently, we completed a mini-excavator knuckle repair that perfectly highlights what we do best: restoring heavy equipment to full strength and performance with durable, custom-fabricated solutions.
The Challenge: Severe Knuckle Damage
A customer brought us a mini-excavator knuckle that had taken a beating. One ear was almost completely torn off, while the other was badly bent — far beyond a simple weld patch. This was a job that required full fabrication expertise to make it right again.
Step 1: Removing the Damaged Steel
The first step was to remove all of the compromised material. Using our CNC plasma cutting system, we made clean, precise cuts to eliminate the damaged areas and prepare the knuckle for rebuilding. Accuracy at this stage is essential for a long-lasting repair.
Step 2: Cutting and Aligning New Ears
We then cut two new ears out of heavy-duty steel using our CNC plasma table and drilled holes for the drift pins. To ensure perfect alignment, we used a piece of tubing that matched the pin bushing size, guaranteeing everything lined up exactly as it should.
We also fabricated a new metal washer, drilled for the drift pins, to restore the knuckle’s full function and secure the assembly.
Step 3: Welding and Reinforcing for Strength
Once everything was perfectly aligned, we finish-welded the new ears onto the knuckle. For added strength, we cut and welded on two overlay plates to reinforce the weld seams — making the part even stronger than before.
Finally, we finished it with a durable black paint coating for corrosion resistance and a professional look.
The Result: Stronger Than New
When the customer picked up their mini-excavator knuckle, it looked and performed better than new. Our precision cutting, custom fabrication, and expert welding brought the part back to life — saving our client time and money compared to full replacement.
